The Sheldrake Yacht Club was founded in April, 1907 in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
It is one of the oldest yacht clubs, as recorded in Lloyd's Registry of
Yachts, on the western end of Long Island Sound.
Sheldrake
has been a yacht club without a clubhouse since 1950. This fact has
affected the character of club activities and has served to strengthen
many of them considerably. We returned to the harbor in 1994, and hold
our meetings at the Stephen E. Johnston Beach Pavilion near the site of
our original clubhouse.
Our members are active yachtsmen in both
sail and power. Our membership has included leaders in the U.S. Power
Squadrons and the U.S.Coast Guard Auxiliary. We claim many champions in
both One Design Class and ocean racing.
As a participant in YRA races, Sheldrake conducts several club races.
In the fall, Sheldrake's famous Whalers Race, which features an
anchored start, has become an important sailing event. Features of our
monthly meetings, which are held the second Wednesday of each month at
the Stephen E. Johnston Beach Pavilion on Harbor Island, are lectures
by prominent yachtsmen and marine specialists, often accompanied by
slides and video tapes. These are enthusiastically attended and provide
social contact for members during the winter months.
We stand for safe and courteous boating and hope that our members will set a good example for others on Long Island Sound.
